With the recent cooler temperatures, the ice rink at Marquette Commons was flooded the week of January 8, 2006. The top two photos of were taken Saturday, January 13, 2007.
The Commons, designed by U.P. Engineers & Architects, received an award at the 2005 Michigan Cool U.P. Summit in Marquette. It was the winner under the “Cool Development” category. The Commons is an innovative outdoor public gathering area and downtown urban space designed for four-season usage (but with an emphasis on winter use).
In addition to the rink, the facilty has a warming area with support facilities. During warmer months, the rink area may be used for art shows, exhibits, performances, farmers market and public gatherings.
